History of the Corpus Christi Ballet
Founded in January 1974 as the Corpus Christi Ballet Theater under the direction of Larry and Bettye Roquemore, the first season included Peter and the Wolf and an invitation from Maestro Maurice Peress, Music Director of the Corpus Christi Symphony, to perform the first production of The Nutcracker. This year's performance of the Nutcracker will celebrate 40 years of continuous performances by the Corpus Christi Ballet.
In June 1985, Corpus Christi Ballet was renamed with the arrival of Richard and Cristina Munro as Artistic Directors. Since the 1985-1986 season, Cristina Stirling Munro, as sole Artistic Director, has brought her many years of professional experience and expertise to the company. Her influence and talent are particularly evident in the Company's wide classical repertoire. Alexandra Emory was Ballet Mistress for several years before becoming Co-Director.
Corpus Christi Ballet offered a subscription season beginning with the 1985-1986 season and developed an association with the Corpus Christi Symphony, and more recently formed the Corpus Christi Ballet Orchestra.
Corpus Christi Ballet is an Honor Company with Regional Dance America and is proud to represent Corpus Christi throughout the Southwest and participate in the Southwest Regional Ballet Festival each year.
Corpus Christi Ballet plays a major part in dance education throughout the city with its premiere and innovative program, Ballet Works for Kids which includes lecture demonstrations, and Children's Spotlight on Ballet performances at Selena Auditorium featuring highlights of the current public performance for area schools of the Coastal Bend.
